Pneumonia

What is Pneumonia?

Pneumonia is an infection in your lungs caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi, or inhaling a chemical or liquid irritant. It occurs when the air sacs in your lungs become inflamed and fill with pus or fluid.

Pneumonia ranges in severity from mild to severe or even life-threatening but is more serious in adults over age 65, people with weak immune systems, infants, and young children.

What are the symptoms of Pneumonia?

The following signs and symptoms may indicate pneumonia:

  • Chest pain upon coughing or breathing
  • Confusion in older adults
  • A cough with phlegm
  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Vomiting, nausea, or diarrhea
  • Sweating
  • Shaking chills
  • A low body temperature

Mild pneumonia is similar to having the flu or a cold, but you might suddenly feel worse or experience long-lasting symptoms.

How is Pneumonia diagnosed?

At Prime Pulmonary & Sleep Center, your physician reviews your medical history and completes a physical exam. They listen to your lungs and evaluate your breathing. Crackling or bubbling sounds may inculcate pneumonia.

Your provider may also recommend blood tests, a chest X-ray, pulse oximetry to measure the oxygen levels in your blood, or a sputum test after you cough.

What is the treatment for Pneumonia?

The basis of your personalized pneumonia treatment plan from Prime Pulmonary & Sleep Center depends on the type of pneumonia you have and its severity. Your physician may prescribe antibiotics to treat bacterial pneumonia. Alternatively, cough medicines and over-the-counter pain or fever reducers can help alleviate symptoms of viral pneumonia.

At-home care includes getting lots of rest, drinking plenty of fluids to stay hydrated, and taking medications as prescribed.

In severe cases of pneumonia, especially in older adults or young children, hospitalization might be necessary. Severe symptoms may require a breathing machine or ventilator. Your physician will let you know which treatment is most appropriate for you. In addition to pneumonia, the team treats asthma, bronchitis, and other conditions that affect your breathing.

How can I prevent Pneumonia?

The best way to prevent pneumonia is to get vaccinated. Practicing good hygiene is an excellent prevention strategy, too. Wash your hands regularly with soap or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Don’t smoke, get plenty of sleep, eat a healthy diet, and exercise regularly.

If you have a cold or bronchitis, take care of yourself with rest and plenty of fluids to prevent your illness from becoming pneumonia.

If you suspect pneumonia or another illness requiring treatment, such as asthma or bronchitis, call Prime Pulmonary & Sleep Center for an appointment or book online today.
